Joe Calomino picked up his first harmonica at the ripe old age of 57, and his never-ending journey began. In 2017 that journey led him to one of the nation’s leading harmonica players and harmonica historians, instructor, Joe Filisko. Joe continues to learn his craft under the tutelage of Mr. Filisko at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.
As Joe slowly begins to take his harmonica playing to new levels of growth, he is also incorporating a vocal repertoire into his musical journey. Now at 64 years of age, Joe recently ended a two-year run with the Dave Hoffheimer Band, and he is thrilled to play with the Grumpy Old Men & Friends Band.
The Grumpy Old Men & Friends Band
The Grumpy Old Men & Friends band is comprised of veteran musicians. Their unique sound features two harmonicas and rhythm guitar. The band has a diverse repertoire including Blues, Swing, and Classic Rock based music.
Band members are
- PapaTurk Nichols – Lead guitar/vocals and drum machine
- Rowen Carlson – Harmonica/guitar and vocals
- Joe Calomino – Harmonica and vocals
Both “PapaTurk” Nichols and Rowen Carlson have more than a century of combined musical background dating before their teens! These guys are the ultimate professionals.
Beginning January 28, the Grumpy Old Men & Friends Band will host a live blues jam from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Warp Corps on the Woodstock Square, 114 N. Benton St., Woodstock. During the last two summers, they hosted an outdoor blues jam at the Sugar Circle on the Square.
