Joel Paterson

Guitar wizard Joel Paterson and his band of Chicago’s finest brings you the best in jazz, blues, Western swing and everything in between!

One of the very bright lights in the world of American roots music is a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter out of Chicago, Joel Paterson.

Paterson started playing guitar in the mid 80s. As he said : “I borrowed a guitar from somebody and tried to teach myself by ear and immediately got into the blues. My mom actually had a Lightnin’ Hopkins LP, The Best of Lightnin’ Hopkins on the Tradition/Everest label. I put that record on when I first started playing guitar. You know everything was in ‘E’. I’m like, ‘“I’ve got to learn this.’ I…learned all the songs on that record. I just wanted to play country blues.

“Then I got obsessed with Blind Blake. That taught me the thumb patterns right away. There was this record store in Madison that had all the Yazoo LPs. I started buying everything I could get my hands on.” at 14 in the 80s, Joel was unique in his obsession. Not many were listening to the “old stuff” then, but he was “kind of obsessed with this music and ignored the 80s music scene completely.”

Joel Paterson — from blues to jazz to swing and rockabilly

Originally from Madison, at age 15, Paterson met a street performer named Catfish, who introduced him to country blues, “a lot of Robert Johnson stuff.” That music influenced Joel, who continued to play country blues through college. Throughout those years, he connected with blues performers from Chicago who came to the bars in Madison.

Of himself and the music he plays, Paterson says, “I make my living playing blues, jazz, swing and rockabilly in Chicago. The blues people can’t figure me out. The jazz people can’t figure me out. I’m lucky though to have my own little niche because I play with really great musicians. We can kind of create our own little genre.”

Joel plays with a number of groups including Devil In A WoodpileJim Liban & The Joel Paterson TrioThe Four CharmsThe Jim Liban Blues ComboThe Jonathan Doyle SwingtetThe Modern Sounds (3)The Western Elstons, and Wee Hairy Beasties.

Discography lists seven CD/albums to Joel Paterson’s credit, most on the Ventrella Records label: Down At The Depot, Go Lightnin’, Steel Is Real, Handful Of Strings, Hi-Fi Christmas Guitar, Let It Be Guitar, and Let It Be Acoustic Guitar! – and two more with others: Jonathan Doyle and Joel Paterson – Another Someday Blues Acoustic Duets From Chicago and Joel Paterson & Lester Peabody – Biscuitboardin’.
