About Ashley & Simpson

Ashley & Simpson
Ashley & Simpson

Comprised of Jennifer Ashley and Joel Simpson, Ashley & Simpson are quickly becoming folk scene favorites. This folk duo blends traditional songs and instrumentation along with beautiful vocal harmonies reminiscent of famous duos such as Ian & Silvia and The Everly Brothers.

With their sophomore release “Off To Here Land,” they have pushed the art of folk to a new sound with an all traditional track list that will delight fans new and old.  Both bringing a classical perspective to their duo, Jennifer Ashley & Joel Simpson have reached a new level with incorporating elements of jazz, popular music and other modern styles in their arrangements.

About John Derado & Anne McIntyre

John Derado & Anne McIntyre
John Derado & Anne McIntyre

Originally from East of Gary, John Derado plays fingerstyle guitar and bottleneck slide. His roots are firmly planted in traditional pre-war blues with a strong inclination towards the Americana singer/songwriter. He has played throughout the contiguous 48 states, Canada and Mexico. In 1991 along with Paul Schriener he took time out to open Front Porch Music in Valparaiso, a retail and performance venue that has hosted such acts as John Hartford, Paul Geremia, Donovan, James Lee Stanley and Jim Post to name but a few.

Anne McIntyre plays keyboards and is originally from Michigan. Her father was a jazz musician who taught her to play the blues when she was just a little girl and she has been playing them ever since. She was a teaching artist at Homespun Music in Kalamazoo, Michigan and has performed in Michigan and the Chicagoland area.

In Chicago, she co-led blues jams as part of the Americana Back Porch Jam at the Old Town School of Folk Music’s First Friday program with Chicago Bob Longmire. She and Bob played in the blues band Midnight Train in venues around Chicago for several years. Then she and Lance Brown, a Chicago singer-songwriter, formed a duo and performed as Last Ditch Effort for the following five years. They competed in the International Blues Competition (IBC) and were selected by the Windy City Blues Society to represent Chicago in the international competition in Memphis, Tennessee. Anne has her roots in folk music and has the blues in her bones.

Together these two perform songs from much of the broad genre known as Americana Contemporary. Musical influences include Paul Geremia, Mose Allison, Darrell Scott, Ry Cooder, and Guy Clark to name but a few. Equally at home with roots blues, tongue in cheek satire, powerful and soulful ballads, their performances have been called synergistic and rightfully so. They have as one of their tenets, “This better be fun.”

Sundays on the Square – celebrate music & summer outdoors

Sundays on the Square in 2022 run every Sunday, June 26 – Sept 4, except for July 17 (the Woodstock Folk Festival is always scheduled the third Sunday in July).

Enjoy some great bands from 5:00 – 7:00 pm (noon – 7:00 pm on the opening Sunday, June 26). We gather on the historic Woodstock Square, Cass & Van Buren Streets, Woodstock IL 60098. Shows vary, some with one and some with two acts, featuring local, regional, and national talent.

Restaurants on the Square are usually open on these evenings with carry-out items, but please confirm with specific places. Of course you can bring your own food items and picnic on the Square. Also, be sure to bring chairs!

Sunday evenings on the Square are always a memorable part of summer in the Woodstock area. Watch this website for updates and specifics on the bands. Better yet, subscribe to our email list if you aren’t already on it!

Donations cheerfully accepted here (left column)

These FREE summer concerts are brought to you by Off Square Music, the Woodstock Opera House, grants with support from the Illinois Arts Council, Arts & Culture for Woodstock and Hotel/Motel Use Fund — as well as your generous donations. It truly takes a village (and a state, and a few cities, a couple of guys with wagons and an ice cream vendor).
