Stage Left Open Mic – Bob Palmer featured performer in November

Bob has been performing in the Chicago area since the early 1970s and currently performs locally at various venues and events.

Bob’s accomplishments include raising his three children to love music, teaching his two sons Bobby and Michael to play guitar, and supporting his daughter Emily’s studies in voice, theater, music, and vocal performance.

Musical highlights of Bob’s music career include 10 years performing as a duo and sometimes single act in various bars and clubs in the Chicago area.

After The Rock River Band, Bob focused his energies on his career in education retiring in 2009 after 20 years in the field with 15 spent as an elementary principal.

More About Bob Palmer’s Music History

Bob reports that the his first music venue was in grade school in the 1960s, where he performed the song “Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones with a friend. He was surprised that he and his friend weren’t shut down because of the lyrics but suspects his teachers were more concerned about the length of his hair than the words of their song.

Bob came from a musical family. His father, Jay Palmer, is a singer and guitar player who performed in Chicago just after WWII. In the late 1950s and 1960s, he was the featured guitarist and singer in the Chicago Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra. Jay taught Bob guitar. Bob’s siblings and his mother played piano and other instruments including guitar, banjo, and mandolin. All the makings for a home band!

As a guitarist and singer, Bob performs cover songs and several original songs, with some influencers including James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Duame Allman, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Pag, Jimi Hendrix. Over the years, he has had the opportunities to perform with bands such as the Outlaws, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Foghat, and the Byrds.

He plays popular music from the 30s/40s and 60s/70s along with some acoustic translations of Classic Rock songs from the 60s/70s by artists like The Beatles, James Taylor, Jim Croce, The Eagles and Bob Dylan. Although he mostly performs covers, there are a couple of original songs he plays on occasion as well. He believes that much of his music cuts across generations and helps him appeal to a wide range of ages.

Selected biographical notes are drawn primarily from an “Interview with Bob Palmer, musician. Interview conducted by Marketing & Communications Intern Cass Kamp.”

Bob Walker performs regularly for Music at the Market.
