Misspent Youth

Misspent Youth is a 3-piece, hard-driving bluegrass band based in DeKalb, Illinois. The band features Dave “DK” Kolars on guitar, long a fixture in the music scene, well-known and a friend to many in Woodstock. With Dave in the band are Dale Ludwig and Mike Warfel.

Misspent Youth will play a lot of songs we don’t normally hear, with two- and three-part harmonies. They put their own twist on the music with their cumulative 150+ years of playing music in many styles.

Members of the Band

Dave “DK” Kolars – Dave, known to many as “DK,” started with his music career with piano, moved to snare drum, then guitar and dobro.

After hearing the Hawaiian lap steel Dave was hooked and started playing Hawaiian lap steel in 2005, attending the Maui Steel Guitar Festival.

He was one of the founders of the Northern Illinois Bluegrass Association (NIBA). He ran it for six years, published the monthly newsletter, and promoted three bluegrass festivals during that time.

Dave also builds ‘ukuleles and guitars, and collects, repairs and re-sells used instruments. DK is a world-renowned expert on Slingerland guitars.

DK is a past judge for Off Square Music Harvest Fest contests and a good friend to many in our community.

Dale Ludewig – Dale owns and operates Woodworks in DeKalb, Illinois. For over 45 years, he has made custom cabinets and furniture and done repair work. He also builds Ludewig mandolins as well as guitars, ukuleles, and banjos and repairs and sets up instruments.
